Emography touches America

2010-02-19

After giving out a shout of concentration, Huh Hwe-tae started a stroke on a giant Chinese drawing paper with an arm-length brush. His moves showed no hesitation. The room grew silent except for the sound of a machine rubbing an ink stick on an ink stone. The powerful act was finished in less than 10 minutes but Huh's nose was sprinkled with sweat. The completed work contained bold black strokes with an orange circle on top. In a way, it looked like a bright sun peeking out behind tall mountains.

"I wrote 'Sae Achim (New Morning)' in Korean letters, hoping for a great 2010. Yes, it also looks like a picture of a new sun rising on a New Year's Day," the 53-year-old calligrapher told The Korea Herald at his studio in Bangbae-dong, southern Seoul.

'Secret Reunion' goes beyond spy drama

2010-1-22

Early in "Secret Reunion," a clever tale of two marginalized men, middle-aged anti-spy agent Han-kyu (Song Kang-ho) ruefully complains about how the external world is "inconsistent" in driving him to the wall.

His job is to track down and arrest North Korean spies, but when one of the missions he leads fails miserably, his superiors, mindful of their own job security, rush to put all the blame on the working-level officer. Han-kyu's half-comic and half-saddening comment about his sorry state not only showcases Song's trademark acting skill but also highlights the film's message.

Crossover singer releases first album in Korea

2010-01-07

Often considered the next Sarah Brightman, British mezzo soprano Katherine Jenkins is a sensation in the classical music industry.

The 29-year-old is not new to Korea. She impressed the audience when she sang duets with Placido Domingo at the latter's Seoul concert last year.

Jenkins, who had visited Korea for the first time, said the audience's response to her performance was a pleasant surprise...

Ten easy ways to save some cash

2009-12-15

There are plenty of ways to save money other than coupon-clipping. For starters, the Seoul Global Center offers plenty of programs that will help you learn Korean on the cheap, or even give you advice on how to start your own business.

But besides that, try making a budget (and sticking to it), take fewer taxis, or even save 1,000 won notes (지폐) in your freezer. (I know someone that saves about 1,500 notes a year and uses that cash to go on vacation.)

다국적 아티스트들, 한국의 경계를 뛰어넘다

Conventional standards like nationality are becoming more and more meaningless in our time for defining individuals.

More than 1.2 million expats are living in Korea today and that, of course, includes those who are artists.

Some of them, who have already blurred the border of their "home" countries by settling down in Korea, are set to break more cultural limits.
