This is the third in a series of contributions and interview articles exploring standardization issues of the geographic names -- the “East Sea” and “Sea of Japan. Various views on the geographic name of the body of water between the Korean Peninsula and the Japanese archipelago will be presented in aims to raise awareness of the controversy. – Ed.

 

Peter E. Raper is former chairman of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names, and is a research associate of the Unit for Language Management at the University of the Free State, Bloemfontein, South Africa. He is also currently researching San (Bushman) place-names and their influence on toponyms in other languages. Raper obtained his Ph. D. degree at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1971. He served on the South African National Place Names Committee from 1972 to 1999, and was its chairman from 1996 to 1999. He served on the South African Geographical Names Council from 2000 to 2002.

The film is based on the true story of a band of 71 high school-aged students that fended off a North Korean platoon full of battle-hardened soldiers during a skirmish in the frontlines of Pohang in North Gyeongsang Province.

The world is more globalized than we think, according to Guy Sorman, a prominent French intellectual and author.

“We are more globalized than we think, although we don’t really realize that nor are we completely adapted to the new world. To really focus on globalization, I talked with many people in different countries to write the book and not just stayed by my desk in Paris,” Sorman told the press on Thursday. Sorman was in Korea to promote his latest book, “Wonderful World,” whose Korean-language edition was launched here last month. The book is composed of 300 essays about globalization and world civilizations.

Getting an international audience to try out a new cuisine also involves helping them understand it, getting them access to it on home turf and enabling them to connect with it on an emotional or cultural level.

The executive producer and producer behind the upcoming U.S. public broadcaster PBS‘ series on Korean cuisine, tentatively titled “Stop and Bap Korea,” and InterContinental Hotels Seoul executive chef Nick Flynn, who helped formulate the hit menu “Made in Korea,” are well aware of this.

Korea marks the 60th anniversary of its joining the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization on June 14, not as a recipient country but as a helping hand to the global community.

“Korea, during the past 60 years, has developed remarkably, from a war-torn country so impoverished that it lacked money and technology to publish even school textbooks in the 1950s after the (1950-1953) Korean War, to one that reaches out to the rest of the world,” said Chun Taek-soo, the Korean Commission for UNESCO Secretary-General.

Kukje Gallery in Sogyeok-dong, central Seoul, really lives up to its name “Kukje,” which means international.

It is one of the galleries in Korea that is most often seen at international art fairs. This year alone it participated in The Armory Show in March, Hong Kong International Art Fair in May and is scheduled to participate in Art Basel later this month.

A peculiar café opened this month in an old town hall building in Banjuk-dong, Gongju city in South Chungcheong Province.

Dusty windows and dull gray plastered walls of the original building were nowhere to be seen. Instead, freshly painted windowsills, colorful banners, tables, chairs and fun decorations brightened up the space. The once abandoned site had turned into a bright, lively cove filled with joyful conversations and the aroma of rich coffee.

Alexander B. Murphy is a professor of geography at the University of Oregon and is also Rippey Chair in Liberal Arts and Sciences. He is a former president of the Association of American Geographers and senior vice president of the American Geographical Society.

East Sea/Sea of Japan, what is the problem?

The East Sea/Sea of Japan has a surface of 978,000 square kilometers, a maximum depth of 3,742 meters, and an average depth of 1752 m. This sea is a relatively wide and expansive sea bordered by Korea, Japan and Russia which stretches for about 1,100 km from Wonsanman Bay in the west to Hokkaido in the northeast and for about 1,700 km from the Korea Strait in the south to the Tartar Strait in the north.

The sea is connected with the East China Sea and the Pacific Ocean via the Korea Strait in the southwest, the Pacific Ocean in the east via the Tsugaru Strait which divides Honshu and Hokkaido, and the Sea of Okhotsk by both the La Pérouse (or Soya) Strait which separates Hokkaido from the Russian islands of Sakhalin and the Tartary Strait which separates Sakhalin from the eastern coast of Siberia. Without these four narrow channels, the sea would be an enclosed sea surrounded by land.

Actress Yoon Jung-hee, the heroine of “Poetry,” may have missed out on the much coveted bets actress award at this year’s Cannes International Film Festival, but the veteran’s return to the big screen has rejuvenated her passion for acting.

Despite the film’s only honor going to writer-director Lee Chang-dong for his work on the screenplay, Yoon said she was content with the response and praise she had been showered with at the world’s most glamorous and prestigious film festival.

Economic growth was once considered the top priority of Korea. In the ’70s and ’80s, the national slogan was “exporting is the only way to survive,” and factory building was in full swing in Korea.

In the areas around Guro-dong and Garibong-dong, in southern Seoul, the Guro Industrial Complex was built. The Garibong-dong five-way intersection served as the border that divided the complex. To the north of the intersection, electronics assembly factories moved in while clothes and sewing factories gathered in the south. The most famous outlet street, the Gasan Digital Complex area, grew from discount outlets situated at the corner of the clothing factories in the southern part of the industrial complex.

Empress' carpet found in museum

National Museum of Korea announced on Wednesday that it had found a relic similar to the lost leopard carpet assumed to have been in Empress Myeongseong’s office, in its collection.

The empress’ carpet, made of 48 leopards’ pelts, was lost on its way back to Korea after it was taken to the U.S. during the Korean War.

Early next month, the Myeongdong Theater marks its first anniversary since re-opening its doors in its original form at the heart of the famous shopping district in Seoul.

Sun Gallery president Kim Chang-sil was running about in high heels in her gallery in Insa-dong, central Seoul, answering her endlessly ringing cellphone and checking every little detail, on a Thursday afternoon.

The 75 year old is still the busiest person in the gallery, 33 years after she stepped into the world of art dealing. She had many titles over the years, including two terms as the president of the Galleries Association of Korea.

Lee's 'Poetry' wins Cannes screenplay prize

Asian entries at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival took home some of the top honors on Sunday at what many consider the most prestigious international film competition in the world.

Korean writer-director Lee Chang-dong was awarded with screenplay honors for “Poetry,” his lyrical ode to self-discovery, while Thai entry “Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives” was given the Palme d’Or -- the festival’s top prize.
