Seodaemun Prison to be restored

Work to restore the Seodaemun Prison in western Seoul will get underway in earnest this year to mark the 100th anniversary of Japan's annexation of Korea, Seoul City officials said yesterday.
The prison, which was constructed in 1908, was where Korean independence fighters were incarcerated, tortured and killed during the 1910-1945 colonial period. It had been used as a correctional facility until 1987. In 1992, a historical park opened on the site.
