Korea marks annexation anniversary

Braving the late summer downpours, thousands of Koreans gathered outside monuments in central Seoul on Sunday, declaring invalid an annexation pact that put Korea under Japan’s colonial rule a century ago.

Signed by representatives of the Korean and Japanese imperial governments, the Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty took effect Aug. 29, 1910, resulting in historical events that continue to undermine Korea’s national pride.
