Seoul's best beer

2010-1-29

Following is a the first in a two part series on where to find the best beer in Seoul. Part I looks at places south of the Han River, while Part II will consider north of the Han. - Ed.

Knocking Korea's mass-produced beers is a prime conversation topic for many expats, who liken the lagers' names to the unfortunate English words they closely resemble.

"Good beer" and "Korea" are words seldom used in the same sentence. But like every country that has omnipresent factory-made beers low in both price and flavor, Korea also has a small but dedicated army of craft brewers fighting to prove that good Korean beer is possible.

Korean cuisine with a twist

2010-1-29

This is the 63rd in a series of articles highlighting tourism spots in Seoul. The guide for planning weekend trips in the capital city will help readers rediscover Seoul. - Ed.

By Jung Bo-sang

When travelling abroad, most Koreans prefer a bowl of rice to a piece of bread. Some struggle to find a Korean restaurant, only to find the dishes somehow altered, even if people seem to really enjoy it. As the proverb says, "A tangerine becomes a hardy orange once it crosses the Yangtze River."

Korean dishes are easily altered, and it may no longer be avoidable to change Korean food into a more "globalized" form. The idea in this is to find common denominators in the taste that everyone can enjoy. In this context, this article will introduce several Korean restaurants in Seoul trying to make alterations.

'Grand Chef' sequel whets appetite but lacks meat

2010-1-28

It was all there right on the screen - the mouth watering close-ups of fresh, crisp leafy cabbages marinating in all sorts of spices with the hands of chefs, covered in red chili sauce, delicately tearing strips of their masterpieces.

And there were all the right ingredients for a feast of a film, but it was clear the team behind "Le Grand Chef, Kimchi Battle," was far more concerned about visual pageantry than storytelling.

Designer showcases beauty of Hangeul

Hangul's value was proved once again when a minority in Indonesia - the "Cia-Cia" tribe - officially adopted the Korean written alphabet last summer.

Recently, its aesthetic values have attracted the attention of consumers here and abroad, appearing on handbags, wallets and ties.

Designer Lee Geon-maan, a former textile art professor at Hongik University, Seoul, has always had a love for Hangeul. He has even used the alphabet as a motif at his own fashion house, Leegeonmaan AnF, which launched in 2001.

'Secret Reunion' goes beyond spy drama

2010-1-22

Early in "Secret Reunion," a clever tale of two marginalized men, middle-aged anti-spy agent Han-kyu (Song Kang-ho) ruefully complains about how the external world is "inconsistent" in driving him to the wall.

His job is to track down and arrest North Korean spies, but when one of the missions he leads fails miserably, his superiors, mindful of their own job security, rush to put all the blame on the working-level officer. Han-kyu's half-comic and half-saddening comment about his sorry state not only showcases Song's trademark acting skill but also highlights the film's message.

NEW YORK - Located on 32nd Street between Fifth Avenue and Broadway, New York's "Korea Way" is the center for Korean cuisine, shopping and culture. Though only one block long, the street adjacent to such tourist attractions as Madison Square Center, Herald Square and the Empire State Building features almost every aspect of modern-day Korean life, from Korean banks to "noraebang."

Until about 10 years ago, the street at the center of midtown Manhattan was not even as globalized as Seoul's Itaewon area, as this bustling street didn't attract many non-Korean New Yorkers.

Gallery retraces 40 years of Korean art

2010-01-13

There was time when the idea of selling art came as a shock to most people.

"I was in my senior year in college in 1970 when Gallery Hyundai opened in Insa-dong. I saw a small article introducing the brand new business under the headline, 'We sell paintings.' The story would make you laugh now, but back then it was so interesting. It produced a similar sensation as the article that said 'A pizza place opened in Itaewon' in the 1980s," wrote Yoo Hong-jun, former director of the Cultural Heritage Administration and currently a professor at Myongji University, in a recent review.
