State dance company to tackle gender gap

Korea’s first state-funded contemporary dance company will hire and nurture more male dancers to balance the ratio between genders, the organization’s artistic director said.
“When I led a private contemporary dance company, the gender ratio was 1:8, one male dancer and eight female dancers. That shows how difficult it is for male dancers to make a living out of dance,” Hong Sung-yup, artistic director of the tentatively-named Korea National Contemporary Dance Company, told The Korea Herald.
