Beijing stepped forward to set things straight after Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping’s remarks that the Korean War was “a just war to defend peace against aggression from the U.S.” got on the nerves of Seoul and Washington.

 

Xi’s speech Monday during a meeting with veterans of the Chinese People’s Volunteers to commemorate the 60th anniversary of China’s entry into the war made South Koreans uncomfortable as it sounded like a denial of the fact that North Korea was to blame for the war.

Korea’s idol group Girls’ Generation’s second Japanese single hit the second spot in the weekly Oricon charts in Tokyo this week. It is the first time ever for a non-Japanese Asian group to have done so, and the second time for a foreign female group.

 

The Oricon-approved single, “Gee,” has sold over 66,000 copies since Oct. 20, the day it was first released. The last time a foreign female group hit one of the top three spots in the Oricon charts was back in 1980, when an Irish/British female band, the Nolans, climbed to the second spot with their single “I’m in the Mood for Dancing.”

Prosecutors plan to summon Taekwang Group chairman Lee Ho-jin for questioning this week, in an intensifying investigation into corruption at the nation’s 40th largest conglomerate.

Lee is suspected of creating slush funds and illegally bribing government officials for changes to the broadcasting law in 2008, which allowed the group to acquire a cable TV company.

Chun named Lee’s top aide on foreign affairs

President Lee Myung-bak named Vice Foreign Minister Chun Young-woo his top aide for foreign affairs and national security, Lee’s spokesperson Kim Hee-jeong said Monday.

Chun will replace Kim Sung-hwan, who took office as foreign minister early this month. Kim had succeeded Yu Myung-hwan a month after Yu resigned over the Foreign Ministry’s irregularities in hiring his daughter.

Korea's rising TV star Shin Se-kyung appears in the newly released 30-second trailer of "Acoustic," a film directed by Yu Sang-hun.

Shin plays a singer who suffers from a rare disease in the film, whose cast includes Lim Seung-ong, a member of the idol band 2AM.

FIFA looking into bribery allegations

FIFA said it is currently looking into allegations about a money-for-vote scandal involving two members of the world's soccer governing body.

The allegation has it that FIFA executive committee member  Amos Adamu and president of the Oceania Football Confederation Reynald Temarii
attempted to sell their votes ahead of the process to decide on the venue of the 2018 World Cup games. The two have been alleged to have asked for money in return for their votes.
