Hong Eun-hye, the widow of Korea’s first chief of naval operations Sohn Won-il, expressed deep gratitude to the U.S. military for its dedication to peninsular security during a ceremony marking the 235th founding anniversary of the U.S. navy Saturday.

Dubbed the “mother of the Korean Navy,” Hong, 93, delivered a tearful speech during the annual ceremony at a hotel in Seoul, where some 400 U.S. navy personnel and their spouses, and Korean military officials participated.
