Girls’ Generation breaks record in Japan

Korea’s idol group Girls’ Generation’s second Japanese single hit the second spot in the weekly Oricon charts in Tokyo this week. It is the first time ever for a non-Japanese Asian group to have done so, and the second time for a foreign female group.

 

The Oricon-approved single, “Gee,” has sold over 66,000 copies since Oct. 20, the day it was first released. The last time a foreign female group hit one of the top three spots in the Oricon charts was back in 1980, when an Irish/British female band, the Nolans, climbed to the second spot with their single “I’m in the Mood for Dancing.”
