Korean literature told through live media

2010-02-26

Until the 1980s Korean literature had been largely unknown outside of the peninsula.

Today, its visibility on the international literary market is still marginal at best. As to why this is the case, the answers from local experts have all been varied - sometimes even far-fetched - but one thing most seem to agree on is that the nuance, prose, and the commonly found ambiance of melodrama and yearning in Korean literature gets lost in translation.

Mystery-driven melodrama to hit big screen

2010-02-25

Melodramas tend to have a pattern in terms of storytelling. "Bimilae (The Secret River)," a new melodrama flick starring Yoo Ji-tae and Yoon Jin-seo, goes a step further by embracing an element of mystery.

"I believe my first feature film will present a new melodrama to Korean audiences," director Ryu Hoon told reporters at a news conference held in Seoul yesterday. "The key difference with other films in the genre is a mystery-induced dramatic tension."

Guidelines for pairing Korean food with wine

2010-02-24

To ask a wine lover to give up their libation of choice would be a sin. The first Asian Master of Wine, Jeannie Cho Lee, understands that. Instead, she broadens their repertoire, offering them new partners for wine, from Asia.

After all there is an ecstasy to be had when a good wine meets a good partner. When the aromas of wine are heightened by a dish and the flavors of a culinary concoction enhanced by the ideal partnering of a vintage, then an oenophile cannot ask for a better meal.

After giving out a shout of concentration, Huh Hwe-tae started a stroke on a giant Chinese drawing paper with an arm-length brush. His moves showed no hesitation. The room grew silent except for the sound of a machine rubbing an ink stick on an ink stone. The powerful act was finished in less than 10 minutes but Huh's nose was sprinkled with sweat. The completed work contained bold black strokes with an orange circle on top. In a way, it looked like a bright sun peeking out behind tall mountains.

"I wrote 'Sae Achim (New Morning)' in Korean letters, hoping for a great 2010. Yes, it also looks like a picture of a new sun rising on a New Year's Day," the 53-year-old calligrapher told The Korea Herald at his studio in Bangbae-dong, southern Seoul.

The Willman Band's fresh Latin flavor

2010-02-19

On a certain steep slope in Itaewon, a sound quite different to the local indie scene has emerged. Audiences who are used to punk acts and classic rock cover bands now have a different tune to move to. The Willman Band has brought a Latin flavor to bars in the capital. Although they haven't been together that long, they beat out 13 other bands at Stompers Battle of the Bands to take home first place last November. Now, they are gigging all over Seoul and are ready to take Korea by storm.

Willman Morcillo and band history

The Willman Band actually started in Los Angeles, California back in December 2003. It was called "Willman Morcillo and his Friends" due to the fact that Willman hired different people for different occasions and nobody knew what to call it.

It is not enough to just pick the right restaurant - the cafe or bar afterwards is just as important.

And girls, it's 2010. You are more than welcome to make reservations and give hints on the places you would like to go. If you would like, you can have this page opened to this article and just strategically circle the restaurants, bars, cafes, you would like to go. (A heart or a star would be a good hint.)
