Japan’s promise to return royal books to Korea met with mixed emotions

When Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan apologized back in August for Japan’s 1910-1945 colonial rule of Korea, it was, arguably, more than just words. Aside from his “heartfelt” apology that came out of his “feelings of deep remorse,” Kan offered something that was more practical. In the marking of the 100th anniversary of colonization, Kan promised to “transfer” cultural relics of Korea that Japan seized during the colonial era, including “Uigwe,” one of the most powerful documentary heritage from Korea’s Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910).
